CREATE
Charter High School opened its doors to students in September,
2001 to serve Jersey City youth. Within a few days, staff and students had
to face the tragedy of the World Trade Center attack right across the
river.
The
new CREATE school community pulled together in sadness and in strength.
The Class of 2005, the very first graduating class, will always remember
how their high school years began.
| CREATE
Charter High School is a public school open to all
students on a space-available basis. We operate independently of the
district board of education under a charter granted by the New
Jersey Commissioner of Education. Once the Commissioner approves the
charter, the school is managed by a board of trustees deemed to be
public agents authorized by the State Board of Education to
supervise and control the school. A charter school shall be a body
corporate and politic with all powers necessary or desirable for
carrying out its charter program. |
In
the first year, CREATE consisted of 95 ninth grade students, one
administrator and six teachers. In the second year, the tenth grade was
added, and the number of staff members also increased.
By
2003-2004, the school grew to accommodate three grades (9, 10, and 11),
and a staff of thirty-seven (teachers, administrators and support staff).
There were two fully equipped computer labs, a new state-of-the-art
science lab, two art studios, and large classrooms for every course.
In
2004-2005, the music program, expanded sports program, and business
education program have been added.
CREATE was founded by Steve Lipski, the school’s first
principal and the current Executive Director/School Administrator/CEO.
