Admission
Application and Registration Process

Admission Forms

Applications are available upon request. As a public school, any high school age student that is a resident of Jersey City may choose to attend CREATE Charter High School. The only limitations are those dictated by the number of seats available at any given grade level.

The parent or guardian of the interested student submits the completed application form.

If the number of applications exceeds the number of seats available, an impartial lottery is held. The student’s name is then placed on a waiting list.

As a seat becomes available, the student that is at the top of the list is then notified.

Registration occurs after all necessary documents are submitted and grade level, and residence are verified. The student must officially be transferred out of the Jersey City School District or other school district and transferred into CREATE Charter High School for registration to be considered complete.

N.J.A.C. 18A:36A-7. Student admissions to charter school

A charter school shall be open to all students on a space available basis and shall not discriminate in its admission policies or practices on the basis of intellectual or athletic ability, measures of achievement or aptitude, status as a handicapped person, proficiency in the English language, or any other basis that would be illegal if used by a school district; however, a charter school may limit admission to a particular grade level or to areas of concentration of the school, such as mathematics, science, or the arts. A charter school may establish reasonable criteria to evaluate prospective students which shall be outlined in the school's charter.

N.J.A.C. 18A:36A-8. Enrollment preference

a.       Preference for enrollment in a charter school shall be given to students who reside in the school district in which the charter school is located. If there are more applications to enroll in the charter school than there are spaces available, the charter school shall select students to attend using a random selection process.

b.      A charter school shall not charge tuition to students who reside in the district

c.       A charter school shall allow any student who was enrolled in the school in the immediately preceding school year to enroll in the charter school in the appropriate grade unless the appropriate grade is not offered at the charter school.

d.       A charter school may give enrollment priority to a sibling of a student enrolled in the charter school. If available space permits, a charter school may enroll non-resident students. The terms and condition of the enrollment shall be outlined in the school's charter and approved by the commissioner. The admission policy of the charter school shall, to the maximum extent practicable, seek the enrollment of a cross section of the community's school age population including racial and academic factors.

Orientation

Prior to the first day of classes, orientation will be held for students and their parents. During the orientation meetings, the complete academic program will be explained, and the CREATE Code of Conduct will be reviewed. New and returning students will tour the building, and will be able to meet with their teachers and other staff members. School supply lists will be distributed so the students will be prepared to get to work from the first day of classes. All students will receive their schedules, and upper classmen will be able to select electives if their schedule permits. New students will be given assessments to help us determine the most appropriate schedule.
