Fine and Performing Arts
Department


All students will take the foundation visual arts courses in their freshman year. In subsequent years, students may choose from among the other art courses offered. In sophomore year, students may choose to take music or art courses. Some courses have prerequisites and advanced courses are by recommendation of the art department. Courses offered will be based on student interest.


VISUAL ART

FPA 101 Foundations of Visual Art 
The expected outcome of this class is that students will approach world artworks with an open mind. They will create expressive works of their own which reflect an understanding of the elements and principles of design, proper use of tools and materials, exhibit a sense of pride and craftsmanship, and which effectively communicate their intended expressive content. This is a foundation course required of all freshmen, unless exempt by the art department.

FPA 102 Foundations of Art History 
This survey course covers the development of the visual arts from the Pre-historic era, to the Renaissance and including present times. Comparisons of social, cultural, and industrial concepts within any given period and their influences on the arts are studied. The artistic influences from one period to another are creatively examined. Students develop their ability to examine and analyze art intelligently. They also become acquainted with the major forms of expression and gain an understanding of art from other times and cultures. This is a foundation course required of all freshmen, unless exempt by the art department.

FPA 211 Drawing 
Drawing allows students to learn to create the illusion of three-dimensional form on a two-dimensional surface by using blending, stippling, hatching, and crosshatching techniques and various line techniques. Pencil, charcoal, pastel, conte crayon and pen and ink are the major media explored; however, other less-traditional media are introduced. Emphasis is on drawing from direct observation and on the creation of original images. Sketchbook assignments to be completed as homework are required. Students keep a portfolio of their work.

FPA 212 Painting 
Students will learn the basics of painting, and the use of different types of paint media and varied brushes. Composition, value, color theory, care and use of materials and technique will be covered. This course introduces various painting techniques, and builds skill slowly from the simple application of a single color and blending, to layering.

FPA 213 Sculpture and Three Dimensional Art 
The courses gives students the opportunity to develop skills and solve problems related to the three-dimensional aspect of sculptural art. Students learn to work with negative and positive space while designing and building three-dimensional forms with a variety of media. Students utilize the elements of art and the principles of design, as well as develop terminology related to Sculpture. Oral and/or written analysis is used throughout the course. 

FPA 214 Studies in Art History 
Students explore trends in art, both world art and American art with focus on specific eras, cultures, and movements: Asian Art, African Art, Renaissance Art, Native and American Folk Art, Modern Art.

FPA 321-322 Art Studio 1 & 2 
These courses are designed for the serious art student who wants to continue in a specific area of art beyond the course offerings. An in-depth studio art experience is tailored to each individual student. Students keep 
a portfolio of their work. Enrollment is by recommendation of the art department.

FPA 421-422 Independent Studies in Art 1 & 2
These courses are designed for the serious art student who wants to continue in a specific area of art in their senior year. An in-depth studio art experience is tailored to each individual student. Students will explore colleges and universities with strong art programs, and will research various careers in the art field. Students will develop
a portfolio of their work for presentations to colleges. Enrollment is by recommendation of the art department

MUSIC


FPA 201 and 202 Foundations of Music 
In this course students will learn the fundamentals of music and music theory. Students will explore various types of music from different times and places, and will begin to learn music notation. All students will be introduced to beginning keyboard techniques, and will be able to try out various musical instruments. 

FPA 301 and 302 Instrumental Music
In this course, students will play a band instrument. Instruction will range from the beginners to the novice level. Band members and marching band members will be drawn from this class. Students may continue in this course for more than one module. 

FPA 303 and FPA 304 Band: Marching and Jazz
In this course, students will pursue an area of interest in instrumental music, based on recommendation of the music department.

FPA 401 and 402 Advanced Independent Music Studies
This course is open to students with an interest in music, and who may be considering a career in music. Students will be required to complete a culminating project, either written or performed.
