All students will take the foundation visual arts courses in their freshman year. In subsequent years, students may choose from among the other art courses offered. In sophomore year, students may choose to take music or art courses. Some courses have prerequisites and advanced courses are by recommendation of the art department. Courses offered will be based on student interest.
HL 101 Introduction to Fitness Education
This is a course of general physical education activities of team, lifetime, and individual sports. At the beginning of each class, PT activities and warm-ups specific to each sport will be practiced. Each student will be evaluated on participation, attitude, and skill tests and/or written tests. As in all other physical education classes, fitness tests and the President’s Fitness Challenge will be given.
HL 102 Introduction to Healthy Living
This introductory course will focus on healthy relationships, and understanding the mindset and behaviors needed for success. The purpose of the healthy living component is to help the students develop a better understanding of mental health, substance abuse, human sexuality, healthy eating, personal hygiene, safety and first aid. Students will learn healthy habits, and will focus on ways to positively communicate and interact with all people.
HL 201 Team Sports in Physical Education
Team Sports in Physical Education is a course of strictly team activities, which includes flag football, soccer, and basketball. Before each class, warm-ups specific to each sport will be taught. Each student will be evaluated on participation, attitude, skill test and/or written tests. As in all other physical education classes, fitness tests will be given. Sportsmanship, team spirit and cooperation are stressed in games and class activity.
HL 202 Healthy Living 2
The course is designed to address issues of importance to young adults. Healthy Living deals with personality, adjustment and family life. It attempts to build wholesome attitudes toward the many drives, feelings and urges that frequently are present in each student. The development of healthy sexual attitudes, as well as a better understanding of human reproduction is stressed. Students are helped to understand and cope with sexual problems. The reality of marriage and family living is also explored. Students are encouraged to think "physical fitness" and implement this fitness mentality in daily life.
HL 301 Nutrition
Rutgers University in partnership with the Healthy Living Department of CREATE Charter High School will present a hands-on, comprehensive course in nutrition and healthy eating. Students will receive a Certificate from Rutger’s University upon successful of the course.
HL 302 Individual Sports in Physical Education
Individual Sports in Physical Education is a co-educational course of individual, dual, and lifetime sports, which includes tennis, golf, and bowling. Before each class, warm-ups specific to each sport will be taught. Each student will be evaluated on participation, attitude, skill tests and/or written tests. As in all other physical education classes, fitness tests will be given.
HL 303 Driver’s Education
This course deals primarily with automobile safety. The student will learn to develop the proper attitude, appreciation and understanding essential to safe, sane, cooperative use of the streets and highways in the State of New Jersey. Also stressed are the dangers of operating a car while under the influence of alcohol and/of drugs. Basic physical skills and testing of these skills are introduced in this course. Student’s will take and pass the Learner’s Permit Test and will receive six hours of private driving lessons.
HL 304 Fitness and Life Styles
Students continue to practice fitness skills, and begin to develop habits for lifelong health. Nutrition and fitness will be explored together, with the goal of establishing realistic health goals. Individual health plans will be developed.
HL 401 Sports Exploration
Students will participate in 4 different units that are offered each marking period. They can include fitness, team sports, individual sports, nutrition, or non-traditional sports.
HL 402 The Wide and Wild World of Sports
Students will have the opportunity to learn about sports from around the world and around the country. Oddities of sports, such as the running of the bulls in Pamplona, and events that are included in the Olympics but not usually practiced in high school will also be introduced. This may also include sports such as ping-pong. Other sports activities and articles will be included at the discretion of the instructor.
HL 403 First Aid and CPR
First Aid includes instruction in emergency first aid and current issues in health
care. The students receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation training (CPR) and gain practical and technical first aid knowledge.
