World Language: Spanish 

 


CREATE Charter High School believes that being able to communicate in Spanish is essential for success in today’s marketplace. The majority of colleges consider a background in a second language of great importance, even though some colleges do not stipulate foreign language as an entrance requirement. CREATE requires 4 courses in Spanish. Additional Spanish courses may be taken as electives.


SP 101 Introduction to Spanish Communication 
This is a first-year course in Spanish. The aim is to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The fundamentals of grammar are introduced and communicative skills are emphasized. Spanish and Latin-American culture are included.


SP 102 Introduction to Conversational Spanish 
An introduction to Spanish using a conversational approach. Students learn basic Spanish language speaking skills. Areas covered include: greetings, health and weather expressions, time, numbers, colors, days, seasons, months; talking and writing about self and others. Appropriate grammatical and cultural topics are incorporated. Participation in class is emphasized. 


SP 111 Conversational Spanish 1 
This beginning course is for students that completed one or more courses in middle school with a B or better. It emphasizes mainly the speaking and listening skills along with cultural perceptions.


SP 112 Conversational Spanish 2 
This is a continuation of Conversational Spanish 1. In addition to speaking and listening, students also will read basic level Spanish literature, and be able to write sentences and paragraphs in Spanish. 


SP 121 Advanced Spanish for Bilingual Students 1 
Spanish for Bilingual students is intended for students of Hispanic heritage who have already achieved some fluency in one or more skill areas. Readings and activities are of a diverse nature with the purpose of defining student perceptions of themselves, their culture, and their language. The readings and audio-visual materials focus on Latin American and Spanish heritage as well as on contemporary issues. 


SP 122 Independent Study in Spanish for Bilingual Students 
The specific cultural focus and linguistic goals are determined at the beginning of the course. An individual program will be developed by the student and the Spanish teachers following an assessment of fluency and literacy in Spanish.

SP 201 Spanish Communication 2 
Students continue to learn basic Spanish language skills. The basics of Introduction to Spanish 9 are reviewed. Areas covered include more student initiated oral work and continued emphasis on improving oral and writing skills in Spanish. More advanced grammatical structures are studied and additional cultural topics are presented. 

SP 202 Basic Conversational Spanish 2 
Basic Spanish 202 has two main goals for the study of foreign languages: communication and culture. The course seeks to develop greater fluency in oral communication: speaking and listening. The Spanish 202 program focuses on cultural aspects of the Spanish language and conversations within a context. The class will be conducted in English and Spanish. 


SP 211 Conversational Spanish 3 
Spanish 2 focuses on two main goals of the study of foreign languages – communication and culture. First, Spanish 2 seeks to develop in the student the four components of communication: speaking, reading, writing, and listening. Second, the Spanish 2 program focuses on cultural aspects of the Spanish language. Students will be required to complete reports on the culture and begin to write paragraphs in Spanish. Students will be evaluated for their written and oral responses. By studying and appreciating a second language, students will be able to better understand the cultural diversity of the Spanish speaking countries and explore other related subjects. The class will be conducted in English and Spanish.


SP 212 Conversational Spanish 4 
This is a continuation of Conversational Spanish 1. The course will be conducted entirely in Spanish, and students will be required to communicate in Spanish. Some reading and written work will be assigned and the focus will be on achieving greater fluency in Spanish. 


SP 221 Advanced Spanish 2 for Bilingual Students 
Students of Hispanic heritage and others who are fluent in the spoken language will be assigned reading material that is suitable for their ability. Individual goals for each student will be set by their Spanish teacher. The course will be conducted entirely in Spanish.


SP 222 Advanced Spanish Communications 
Students will read, write, and speak Spanish. Students will read short stories, read and recite poems in Spanish, and complete group and individual projects. 


SP 321 Advanced Spanish 
Students enrolled in the advanced Spanish classes are able to speak, read and write in Spanish with fluency. They must have prior Spanish courses with an 85 or better, and be recommended by the Spanish Department. This course is conducted entirely in Spanish. 


SP 322 Advanced Spanish for Bilingual Students/Ind. Study 
Students of Hispanic heritage and others who are fluent in the spoken language will be assigned reading material that is suitable for their ability. Their Spanish teacher will set individual goals for each student. 


SP 401 Spanish Contemporary Culture 
Students will continue their study of the Spanish culture. Focus will be on Salsa, Latin Dances and Spanish foods. Groups project, filed trips and guest speakers will be included. 

SP 402 Spanish Literature 
This course is a continuation of the advanced Spanish courses, and is conducted entirely in Spanish. The primary focus of this course is Spanish Literature. In addition to reviewing all grammar at a rapid pace, students will be required to read Spanish novels, essays, poetry and plays.
