Technology and Economics 
Department 


There are very few opportunities for success in the workforce open to individuals that lack an understanding of computers and technology. All colleges require a working knowledge of computer applications. Some careers and majors require much more than the basic ability to turn a computer on and off and surf the web. Comfort with technology and understanding computer science will help CREATE’s graduates advance in the future. The courses offered in the Technology and Economics Department progress from the required foundation courses required of all of CREATE’s students, and will continue with career track courses will provide skills that will increase their future earning potential. 


TECHNOLOGY


TE 101 Keyboarding and Introduction to Windows XP 
All students should have the opportunity to expand their computer skills and knowledge at a rate that is conducive to his/her learning capacity. This is an introductory course for all students. It begins with basic keyboarding techniques and an overview of up-to-date computer programs. Emphasis will be on personal correspondence, reports, and term papers. Students enrolled in this course will gain skills that will make them feel comfortable with computers. This course is required for freshmen.

TE 102 Introduction to Concepts and Techniques
The student will continue to learn the fundamentals of Windows XP and Microsoft Office. Students will be able to complete projects that demonstrate the skills learned, including Power-Point, Chart Creation and Spreadsheets. This course is required for all entering freshmen, and must be passed in order to take more advanced courses. This course is required for freshmen.

TE 201 Web Page Design
This course will explain the fundamental concepts allowing students to design and create web pages for the Internet. Students will learn the basics, use the latest web browsers and text editors to make and evaluate different web page designs and add available JavaScript to make the web pages dynamic. The final project will require students to create an autobiographical webpage that can be used as part of a college application. Required for Sophomores
Prerequisite: TE 101, 102

TE 202 Desktop Publishing
Desktop Publishing is a method of electronically combining text and graphics to produce professional-quality printed documents. With desktop publishing software, students will create impressive-looking documents and effectively produce sophisticated layouts Required for Sophomores Prerequisite: TE 101, 102

TE 211 Introduction to Computer Technology 1/ A+ 
This course introduces the student to basic concepts, terminology and theory in computer technology. It is the first course needed to qualify for the A+ Certification exam. A+ Certification is an industry-wide, vendor neutral program that certifies the competency of service technicians in the computer industry. Earning A+ certification means that students have the technical skills needed to effectively service and support PCs. Many businesses require A+ Certification as a prerequisite to hiring. Prerequisite: TE 101, 102

TE 212 Introduction to Computer Technology 2/ A+ 
This course takes the theory and concepts learned in CST 101 and applies them to hands-on experiences. It covers general circuit theory, preventive maintenance, component removal and installation, and system configuration. Prerequisite: TE 201

TE 213 Test Preparation for the A+ Certification
The course reviews material covered in previous A+ courses and prepares the students to take the industry supported A+ Certification exam. Prerequisite: TE 201, 202, 301, 302 or recommendation of department. 

TE 301 Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop combines technical computer skills with creativity and imagination to develop students graphic arts capability and expression while learning the use of this software package. Students will learn to use a digital camera, digital video camera, and a scanner, as well as learn to download images from the internet. Prerequisite: CST 201, 202 

TE 302 Digital Graphics and Animation
This is an introductory course in design, typography and imaging techniques. The course includes topics such as digital composition, color, imaging, editing, and animation. The student will use the computer’s set of tools, common to bitmapped and object –oriented software programs, to produce and edit digital designs as well as to incorporate design principles when capturing digital images with the scanner and camera. Prerequisite: CST 201, 202, 311, recommendation of department

TE 311 Computer Programming I - Visual Basic 
A course designed to introduce students to the concepts of computers and object-oriented programming through extensive hands-on instruction. Major areas to be covered include the computer system, forms, command buttons, selection statements and loops. Prerequisite: TE 101, 102



TE 312 Computer Programming II - Visual Basic 
A course designed to extend the concepts and skills acquired in Computer Programming I - Visual Basic. The emphasis will be on coding including the CASE statement, local and global variables, sub programs, file manipulation, and user defined functions. Students will be better prepared for windows environment after completing this course. Prerequisite: TE 101, 102, 221

TE 321 Computer Programming/Java 
A course designed to introduce students to the concepts of computer programming in the Java language, the computer language widely used in the business world today. Major topics to be covered include programming methodology, problem solving, and data manipulation. Knowledge of a computer language is a marketable skill qualifying students for careers that are very much in demand today. The enhancement of problem solving skills and reasoning abilities will assist students in every subject area. 
Prerequisite: CST 221, 222, recommendation of department. 

TE 322 Computer Programming/C++ 
Students planning on pursuing computer studies after high school will have an excellent foundation upon completing this course. The development of algorithms strengthens students' problem solving skills and reasoning abilities. The curriculum includes programming methodology using the C++ language, data manipulation, and introduction to data structures, computer systems, and computer ethics. Case studies are used to familiarize students with software design. Prerequisite: TE 221, 222, 321, recommendation of department. 

TE 401 Computer Lab Assistants
Computer lab Assistants will work with Computer Science and Technology Teachers to maintain and improve the technology program at CREATE. Duties will include troubleshooting network and workstation problems, installing new programs, and supporting users of the computers throughout the school. Students will be graded on attendance and completion of assigned duties. Prerequisite: Recommendation of department. 

TE 402 Independent Study in Technology Applications 
The Independent Study course provides opportunities for students desiring to continue in the acquisition of technology, or programming skill sets, build portfolios, solve problems, and create products for school and community. This course is designed to provide flexibility to pursue more advanced study or continuation of courses that students have completed. This course is for students planning on attending college with a major in computer science or engineering. Prerequisite: Completion of advanced courses and recommendation of the department.

 

ECONOMICS/BUSINESS


TE 303 Introduction to Business Concepts
It includes economic and business concepts such as supply and demand, market driven economy, trade, stock market and investments, business plans, basic accounting principles, and budgets. Students will play the “Stock market Game.”

TE 304 Entrepreneurship 
All students in this class will participate in an entrepreneurial project and will actually run a school-based business. In addition to producing a business plan, students will all learn about marketing and advertising. 

TE 403 Workforce Experience
Based on interest and aptitude, students will be able to spend up to two weeks in one or more offices or businesses. This course is only open to students that have demonstrated maturity and self-discipline as may be expected in the workforce. A record of good attendance and punctuality is required. Prerequisite: Recommendation of department and administration.

TE 404 Service Learning
Students will participate in community service projects designed to provide hands on work experience while providing service to the community. Service projects will be identified and developed to be completed within one module.
Prerequisite: Recommendation of department and administration.

TE 411 Career and Occupation Research and Planning
Students enrolled in this class will explore a variety of occupations based on the results of an interest and aptitude survey. Using online sources, research into occupational outlooks, career choices, education and training requirements will be used to develop a career plan. Guest speakers will be invited to class. A career portfolio will be submitted for the final grade

TE 412 Get Ready for the Business World
Students will learn how to fill out applications for jobs and colleges. They will write letters of application and resumes. They will visit businesses and professional offices, and guest speakers will be invited. In addition, students will practice interviewing techniques and learn how to dress for success. 

TE 413 Careers Sampling 
Students will explore careers in technology, business, health and humanities. Students will be placed in real work environments for part of this course. Job coaches will provide on the job mentoring.
