EMERGENCY
CLOSINGS
If
the school is going to be closed due to inclement weather, school closings
will be announced by the local TV and radio stations. There will also be a
message on the school’s voicemail related to the emergency closing.
EMERGENCY
CONTACTS
At
the beginning of each school year, you are asked to complete an emergency
contact form. In the event that we have to contact you during the day, it
is essential that the information on file is kept up-to-date. If for any
reason, your child has to be sent home due to illness or other emergency,
the school has to be able to reach you or a designee.
SECURITY
AND SAFETY
All
visitors to the building must report to the main office. A parent or
guardian must report to the office if a student is going to leave early.
Only the parent, or people authorized by the parent or guardian will be
allowed to pick up the child and sign him/her out. The authorization for
anyone other than the parent or guardian to pick up the child must be
received in writing, and proper identification will be required. In
addition, the release of the student to anyone other than a parent will
also need to be verified through phone contact just prior to release. All
students will be issued picture ID’s.
There are security cameras throughout the school, and all entrances
are monitored.
ATTENDANCE
Whenever
a student is absent or late for school, the parent/guardian will be called
to verify the absence and the reasons for absence. If the student is ill,
a doctor’s note will need to be provided in order for the absence to be
excused. If the reason for absence is because of a courts appearance, a
note from the court will be required. All other absences will be
considered unexcused. Truancy will be notified after 10 consecutive
absences, and the student may not receive credit for courses.
ENFORCEMENT
OF THE UNIFORM POLICY
All
students are expected to be in a clean uniform each day. We recommend each
family purchase a minimum of two sets, since clothing does get soiled. Not
going to the Laundromat will not be an acceptable excuse, and a parent
phone call will not prevent detention from being assigned to the student.
Students in partial uniform will be considered out of uniform.
CELL
PHONE POLICY
Cell
phones are strictly prohibited from being brought to school. While we
understand that some parents give their students cell phones for easier
communication, they have proven to be disruptive and in some cases
hazardous. If a parent needs to reach a child during the day, please call
the office and your child will be notified. Any cell phones found in the
possession of students while on school grounds will be seized, and only
returned to the parent in person.
SCHOOL
SUPPLIES AND BOOKS
Students
are expected to have a minimum of one notebook or one binder section for
each course they take. Folders are also important, since many teachers
give supplemental handouts for the students to take home for homework.
Teachers may require the addition of marble notebooks for journals, or
other supplies provided by the student. In addition, all students should
have the necessary pens and pencils they need to complete their class
work. Most teachers require note taking and written work every day. A
successful student is a well-prepared student. Parents can make sure that
students are prepared.
CONTACTING
THE STAFF
If
a parent or guardian wishes to speak to a teacher or administrator, call
the main number and leave a message and a number or email address where
you can be contacted. All teachers have time set aside in their daily
schedule for parent communication.
PARENT CONFERENCES
According to research and
experience, parent involvement is the most important factor for student
success. For this reason, CREATE Charter High School schedules conferences
with parents when necessary, to include:
- Orientation
for all students and parents at the beginning of each year.
- School
initiated academic conferences are scheduled to distribute report
cards.
- School
initiated academic conferences may be scheduled at other times when
student progress is inadequate.
- Parents
may request conferences with teachers or administrators at any time.
Call the office, and an appointment will be set.
- Parent
conferences are required for serious or repeated misbehaviors that
interfere with the student’s ability to learn, or are disruptive to
the learning community. We feel that changes in behavior are best
accomplished when there is a partnership between parents and the
school. It is expected that parent involvement will help prevent more
serious or continuous misbehavior. Any time an infraction is so
serious that suspension is considered, the parent MUST
attend a disciplinary conference. Out-of-school suspension as a
consequence will be used as the last resort.
- The
school and the Board of Trustees are aware that not all students will
adjust to the school. We have very high expectations for achievement
and a low tolerance for students who are disruptive, disrespectful and
continually misbehave. Students that are unable to adjust may be
withdrawn by parents, while others may be referred for expulsion.
STUDENT
RECORDS
The
school maintains three files on each student: the permanent or cumulative
file, the discipline file, and the health records. Some students will also have a
Special Education file. Cumulative and health records are forwarded to
this school from the last school the student attended. The records are
kept in locked cabinets and are strictly confidential; only authorized
school personnel are able to access the files. If a parent wishes to
review the school records for their own child, they may do so upon
request. No files may be removed from the office. When a student is
transferred to another school, the new school will send for the records.
COMPLAINTS
An
advisory grievance committee made up of teachers and parents has been
established by the Board of Trustees to hear complaints about violations
of the Charter School Act.
